Etymology[edit]

From Ancient Greek Πιτυοῦς, genitive of πίτυς ("pine"), ultimately translation of Georgian toponym ბიჭვინთა (from Georgian ფიჭვი, also meaning "pine") due to abundance of pines in the region.[1]
