Borrowed from Polish Polanie (Poles, literally field dwellers), from Proto-Slavic *poľane, plural of *poľaninъ (field dweller), from *poľe (field) + *-ěninъ, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *pleh₂- (flat, wide).
