Of Celtic/Celtiberian origin, from Proto-Celtic *kʷerkʷernos, from *kʷerkʷus, from Proto-Indo-European *pérkus ~ *pr̥kʷéu- (“oak”) + *-erno-, probably meaning the "Oaken People".
