Ramiro and Ramira stem from a Visigothic proper name *Ranamir, latinised as Ranamirus, Ramirus etc. The Gothic proper name *Ranamir consists of Proto-Germanic *rana- (corner, wedge) and *mērijaz (famous).[1] Cognates include Catalan Ramir.
