Proto-Balto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Of unclear origin. Has been connected to Proto-Indo-European *leyp- (“to stick, smear”) (cf. Slavic *lěpìti), but according to Derksen, the acute accent prohibits such a derivation.
This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
