Proto-Balto-Slavic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Of unclear origin. Has been connected to Proto-Indo-European *leyp- (to stick, smear) (cf. Slavic *lěpìti), but according to Derksen, the acute accent prohibits such a derivation.

This etymology is incomplete. You can help Wiktionary by elaborating on the origins of this term.
