[edit]Borrowed from Latin imperātor, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *per- (“to go forth, traverse”), whence related Proto-Brythonic *rrɨd (“ford”). Parallel borrowing with Cornish emperour (“emperor”) (via French), Old Irish impere, impire (“emperor”).
