From Proto-Balto-Slavic *(s)kerso-, from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kert-. Cognate with Latvian šk̨ḕrss (transverse, cross), Lithuanian sker̃sas (transverse, cross).

Possibly related to the preposition above, to *čerslo (thighs), and to Proto-Celtic *kridsus whence Irish crios (belt), Scottish Gaelic crios (belt), Breton krez (smock, chemise, undershirt), Welsh crys (smock, chemise, undershirt), Old Cornish kreis (smock, chemise, undershirt).
