Etymology

From Proto-Balto-Slavic *gerˀtló, from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Indo-European *gʷerh₃-tlóm. Equivalent to *žerti (“to devour, eat (of animals)”) +‎ *-dlo.

Baltic cognates include Lithuanian gerklė̃ (“throat, larynx”), East Lithuanian gérklę.

Indo-European cognates include Ancient Greek ζέρεθρον (zérethron).
