Latin[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Substantivization of coquīnārius (kitchen, adjective), with /kʷ//k/ by analogy with the same change in coquus (cook, noun) and related forms.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

*coquīnārium m (Proto-Italo-Western-Romance)

  1. cook

Declension[edit]

singular plural
nominative */kociˈnarʲos/ */kociˈnarʲi/
oblique */kociˈnarʲu/ */kociˈnarʲos/

Reconstruction notes[edit]

Possibly a spurious reconstruction, considering that an original /i/ would be expected to reduce in this position. In that case, the descendants below simply reflect later formations based on descendants of cocīnāre (cook, verb). Alternatively, the reduction of /i/ was prevented by analogical influence from the same verb.
