From Proto-Celtic *wertyā (“mound”). Cognate to Middle Welsh gwerthyr, "fortress".

*ᚒᚓᚏᚈᚒᚏᚔᚑ (Uerturio)
- A kingdom in Scotland situated around Moray and Easter Ross, which existed from the 4th to 10th centuries.
