Proto-Brythonic[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Borrowed from Latin pira, plural of pirum. In Vulgar Latin pira was reanalysed as a feminine singular (*pira), but the plural number of *per suggests that this is not the form that underlies the borrowing into Brythonic.

Pronunciation[edit]

Noun[edit]

*per f pl (singulative *perenn)

  1. pears

Descendants[edit]

  • Middle Breton: per
  • Old Cornish: *per (in compound)
    • Middle Cornish: per
  • Middle Welsh: per
