[edit]Probably from *manci- (“earth, land, soil”) + *-kka (diminutive suffix); for semantics, compare Proto-Germanic *erþōbazją (literally “earth-berry”), Russian земляни́ка (zemljaníka) (from земля́ (zemljá, “earth, soil”)), Polish poziomka (from ziemi (“earth”)).
