Probably from *manci- (earth, land, soil) +‎ *-kka (diminutive suffix); for semantics, compare Proto-Germanic *erþōbazją (literally earth-berry), Russian земляни́ка (zemljaníka) (from земля́ (zemljá, earth, soil)), Polish poziomka (from ziemi (earth)).
