Reconstruction:Proto-Finnic/pëllavas
Appearance
Proto-Finnic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Unknown. Compare also Estonian põll (“apron”) (< *pëlli : *pëllë-) and possibly the Estonian toponym Põlva.
Koivulehto has proposed that the word is derived from Proto-Germanic *fellą, but LÄGLOS rejects this theory on morphological grounds; it, instead, proposes a comparison with Latvian pelavas (“chaff”), Lithuanian plėvẽ (“thin skin; film”), but admits that the Finnic *-ll- can hardly be explained from a Baltic or Slavic *-l-.[1]
Noun
[edit]*pëllavas (Northern Finnic)
