Proto-Finnic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Compare also Estonian põll (apron) (< *pëlli : *pëllë-) and possibly the Estonian toponym Põlva.

Koivulehto has proposed that the word is derived from Proto-Germanic *fellą, but LÄGLOS rejects this theory on morphological grounds; it, instead, proposes a comparison with Latvian pelavas (chaff), Lithuanian plėvẽ (thin skin; film), but admits that the Finnic *-ll- can hardly be explained from a Baltic or Slavic *-l-.[1]

*pëllavas (Northern Finnic)

  1. flax
  2. linen
