Etymology[edit]

Possibly from Proto-Indo-Iranian, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *bʰénǵʰus, but there are not that many parallels for a development into a form with *ks. Cognate with Ancient Greek παχύς (pakhús, thick, large).
