Zan descendants presuppose an intermediate *ბაჯ- (*baǯ-) form, with a regular word-final *რ- → ჯ- (*r- → ǯ-) development; the forms then underwent deaffrication (cf., *c₁xwir-, *sir-). In Mingrelian it appears as a compound where the second part is დიდი (didi, big).
