Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *pelǵʰ- (“wheel rim”), cognate with Russian по́лоз (póloz, “skid, runner”), Slovene plâz (“plow sole, strip”). Alternatively, it could be connected with Proto-Germanic *felhaną (“to go, proceed”).
