From pre-Proto-Germanic *prugʰskos, from Proto-Indo-European *prugʰ-ḱó-s, from *prewgʰ- (to leap) +‎ *-ḱós (animal suffix), possibly extended from *prew- (to jump), cognate with Proto-West Germanic *froggō (frog), Old Norse frauðr (frog).[1]
