[edit]From earlier *hemdiz, from Proto-Indo-European *ḱem- (“hornless”), as does generally do not have antlers or horns. Cognate with Ancient Greek κεμάς (kemás, “young deer, pricket”), Sanskrit शम (śáma, “hornless”).[1]
