Uncertain. Possibly from Proto-Indo-European *(s)kewp- (tuft, cluster, hair on the head), related to Gothic 𐍃𐌺𐌿𐍆𐍄 (skuft, hair of the head), German Schopf (tuft), Albanian çup (without tail, maimed).
