From Proto-Indo-European *wogʷʰnis, *wogʷʰmis, probably from Proto-Indo-European *weǵʰ-. Cognate with Old Prussian wagnis (“ploughshare”), Ancient Greek ὀφνίς (ophnís) (Hesychius) and Latin vōmis, vōmer.
