Etymology[edit]

Unknown; perhaps from Proto-Indo-European *h₂endʰ-ó-s, from *h₂endʰ- +‎ *-ós. Possible cognate with Latin andābata, andobatta (“gladiator fighting in a helmet without openings”), presumably from Gaulish *andos, *andā (“blind”) + *batā (“fighter”).[1]. Or, possibly, from the BMAC substrate.
