Etymology[edit]

Often assumed to be a derivation of *-min (-ty) with the elative suffix *-iś with a shift *-miniś > *-miś followed by an irregular shift *-ś > *-s.

Has also been compared with Proto-Turkic *-mïĺ (cf. Tatar -мыш (-mış)).
