Etymology
[edit]Changed by reason of being paired with *višьňa (“sour cherry”) from an earlier *čerša, a borrowing from Vulgar Latin ceresia, the plural of Late Latin ceresium, cerasium reinterpreted as a feminine; ultimately from Ancient Greek κεράσιον (kerásion, “cherry”). Possibly not directly from Vulgar Latin but mediated through a Germanic language.
