Etymology[edit]

The original stem may have been *bür-, which preserved in Kazakh бүру (büru, to grasp prey (of an eagle)). Or a back formation hypothesis *bürküt > *bür-.

Also compared to Proto-Tungusic *muri (eagle), whence in Evenki мури (muri)
