Etymology

From *ur- (to hit; to place) +‎ *-gan. Cognate with *uruk (rope). According to Clauson, unrelated to *ȫrk and *ȫrken which are instead from *ȫr- (to plait). Relation to *arkan (rope) is uncertain.
