From Proto-Germanic *kruppōną, from earlier paradigm *kruppōþi ~ *krubunanþi, from pre-Proto-Germanic *grubʰ-nā́-ti ~ *grubʰ-un-ánti, from Proto-Indo-European *grewbʰ- (to twist, turn). Cognate with Lithuanian grubineti (to stumble).
