Appearance
Proto-West Germanic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain; possibly from Proto-Indo-European *dewh₂- (“to fit”), whence also *tawjaną (“to make, complete”). The original meaning was probably "that which is ready (for use)" or "that which is made, produced". Compare *tōlą (“tool”), from *dowh₂-dʰlom.
