Descendants

I would appreciate some help on the descendants (esp Frisian, Dutch, Norwegian), as my trusty source indicates only OE, OS, and OHG. The OHG I note takes a different verbal ending (-ēn). Is this due to alteration of the original form. I cannot find anything PGmc-wise indicating a -janan verb for this stem. Leasnam (talk) 18:06, 6 July 2012 (UTC)

The OHG ending reflects weak class 3, which disappeared in the other West Germanic languages and became rather marginal in ON as well. So the OHG evidence is pretty strong in this case, as there is no evidence to counter it, and especially as the meaning matches the verb class ('to lean' is a clearly stative meaning). So I think *hlinjanan is quite likely the real ancestor. —CodeCat 00:29, 7 July 2012 (UTC)
