*sanesi seems unlikely development
[edit]@Chuterix, re: diff, do we have any other examples of either the /t-/ → /s-/ shift, or the /o/ → /e/ shift, required to connect Proto-Ryukyuan *sanesi with Proto-Japonic *tanosi?
Neither shift makes sense to me as any kind of Japonic phonological process.
I find myself wondering if this might not instead represent an adjective formed from a root *sane, such as in OJP さ寝 (sane, “a couple sleeping together”), or even 実・核 (sane, “seed; center, main quality; material or ingredient used to make something else; clitoris”). I don't have access to any Yaeyama or Yonaguni materials, however, so I am uncertain of the semantics of the modern reflexes. ‑‑ Eiríkr Útlendi │Tala við mig 18:48, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- The Ishigaki Dialect Dictionary p. 375 lists this:
- サ⌜ニ⌝シャーン [sa⌜ni⌝ʃaːŋ] (形) 嬉しい。楽しい。「楽(たぬ)しあり」の転訛。
- Note how /u/ can go from /o/, so it's an ablaut. See this presentation (albeit not peer-reviewed?) here for more info (although doesn't mention this.) Chuterix (talk) 20:56, 19 January 2024 (UTC)

- *sanesi- sounds like a good candidate, but *t → *s before *a would have weaker motivation compared to, e.g., *ti [tɕi], *tu [tsu] → *si, *su. of course, not entirely impossible, though.
