Origin of the -a- stem?

[edit]

Is there consensus where the *-a- in the stem comes from? If we consider only the infinitive, it concurs with pIE h₂-factive, however, morphologically the other forms continue the themaic *bʰer-e-ti. I haven't found any source which explicitly discusses this topic, thus, I left the theme in brackets. It should be pointed that the Slavic etynom differs in meaning from the proto-Indo-European origin (which meant to carry, to bear), so it's not impossible that we have deal with a back-formation of the factive variant of *bʰer-e-ti. The replacement of plain -ti by -ati is a common phenomenon in Slavic, it happened with many more verbs. Sometimes the two variants still existed side by side in Proto-Slavic. —Rua (mew) 10:41, 8 January 2019 (UTC)Reply
