Denominal verbs *boraviti, *barati

[edit]

In my opinion, *borъ (the O-vocalism of *bьrati) may be the basis of *boraviti /to employ, to utilize/ and *barati /to examine, to handle, to inquire/. Trubachev derives both of them from *borti /to fight, to struggle/. Their etymology is problematic, so I won't add them as derivatives, but still I find it useful to mention them. If they are indeed from the same etymological nest as *bьrati, then we can explain the slight difference between Slavic *bьrati (“to pick up”) and pIE *bʰer- (to bear, to carry). The original meaning appears to be to process/to manipulate, which then diverged into picking/bearing/carrying/collecting/selecting/etc. This semantics also explains the numerous extensions of the proto-root, which is a bonus benefit.
