Some derive it from the PIE word for "cattle" *gʷṓws, which would make it akin to *govędo and an original meaning "cattle dung", but the laryngeal which Derksen reconstructs bugs me (presumably to make it akin to Sanskrit word). --Ivan Štambuk (talk) 09:12, 15 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
