Confusing etymology and references

[edit]

@Useigor: Do we really need all these comparisons with other Slavic terms denoting weapons? What do you want to demonstrate with them - that tool names can be derived from verbs? Also, what's the point of Dahl's references for Russian тети (teti), тяпать (tjapatʹ), тепсти (tepsti))? Are these terms perhaps rare or controversial, hence they need special referencing? Nothing said in Dahl's dictionary concerns the proto-Slavic lemma. Not at last, what's the point of the ====See also==== section? I don't find any meaningful relationship between *toporъ and *topiti, *topolь, *teplъ, etc. I don't see how these contribute to the overall question of *toporъ's origin.

PS The terms for 'handle', 'butt' may be of general interest to some, so I'll add them into a visual dictionary (instead of hanging for under 'See also') Безименен (talk) 23:21, 3 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
