Class III verb

[edit]

Due to the descendants, is it safe to say that this is a Class III stative verb (move to *kapaijaną)? I cannot see OE capian coming out of *kapjaną. *kapjaną would surely produce ceppan. Leasnam (talk) 21:00, 21 May 2013 (UTC)Reply

The development of class 3 isn't purely a matter of sound changes. At some point, the old ending (whatever it was) was replaced by -ōną or its descendant. The direct phonological ancestor of capian is Proto-North-Ingvaeonic *kapōjan. —CodeCat 21:10, 21 May 2013 (UTC)Reply
