From Latin Samothrācē, from Ancient Greek Σαμοθρᾴκη (Samothrāíkē, Samian Thrace), from Σᾰ́μος (Sắmos, Samos) + Θρᾴκη (Thrāíkē, Thrace), from the island's early Greek colonizers and the general ancient territory in which it lay.
