Shortened from Spahandelin (surname) some time after 1667, coined by Persian-Swedish Crown Equerry Thure Spahandelin, née Abdollah Esfahani, in circa 1620, derived from Persian سپاهان (/⁠Spahān⁠/), an older form of the city and surname اصفهانی (/⁠esfahâni⁠/, Isfahan).
