Coined by Persian-Swedish Crown Equerry Thure Spahandelin, née Abdollah Esfahani, in circa 1620, learned borrowing from Persian سپاهان (/⁠Spahān⁠/), an older form of the city and surname اصفهانی (/⁠esfahâni⁠/, Isfahan).
