[edit]Coined by Persian-Swedish Crown Equerry Thure Spahandelin, née Abdollah Esfahani, in circa 1620, learned borrowing from Persian سپاهان (/Spahān/), an older form of the city and surname اصفهانی (/esfahâni/, “Isfahan”).
