From (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Old High German sigu (victory) + munt (protection), and ultimately from (deprecated template usage) [etyl] Proto-Germanic *segaz (victory, triumph) and *mundō (protection, security); cognate to Norwegian Sigmund. The father of Siegfried in the Nibelungenlied.
