has no animate/inanimate distinction[edit]

@Atitarev I'm pretty sure compounds of 2/3/4 in Belarusian do not have the animate/inanimate distinction (as in Russian). Previously the declension listed both animate and inanimate forms, but this example seems to show otherwise:

Называй гэта помстай, Якуб. Мы не знішчылі ніводнай парушынкі, а пыл забіў дваццаць тры чалавекі. — Я буду вымушаны паведаміць камандаванню! — Само сабой.

Can you confirm? Also, do you know if Ukrainian works this way as well or has an animacy distinction in compounds of 2/3/4? Benwing2 (talk) 04:12, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply

@Benwing2: Both Russian and Belarusian can have an optional/colloquial animate/inanimate distinction:
  • Belarusian: Сёньня ратаўнікам удалося эвакуіраваць верталётам дваццаць трох турыстаў (дваццаць тры туры́сты - OK and is the norm)
  • Russian: прослушал двадцать трёх пианисток (двадцать три пианистки - OK and is the norm). Ref: Избранные работы по русистике. Фонология. Морфонология. Морфология ...By Наталия Еськова
You will find some discussions about "двадцать трёх пассажиров" vs "двадцать три пассажира" and similar. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 04:23, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2: gramota.ru insists on "двадцать два ученика" being the correct accusative form (not "двадцать двух учеников"). --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 04:28, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2: I am OK to mark those as colloquial or non-standard or leave as is. --Anatoli T. (обсудить/вклад) 04:32, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Atitarev OK, we can either add the animate/inanimate distinction to the declension table or mention this in the Usage Notes as colloquial but proscribed, and leave the declension table as-is. I'm thinking maybe the latter but I will follow whatever you prefer. Benwing2 (talk) 06:20, 29 July 2022 (UTC)Reply
@Benwing2: Since these colloquialisms are sort of frowned upon, I'll leave it up to you (based on efforts, more than anything). The colloquial usage can be attested, so if we provide any usage notes, it won't hurt - even native speakers are not 100% sure about the correct usage. Anatoli T. @Benwing2: The important bits from gramota.ru above:
"Обратите внимание: в конструкциях с составными числительными, оканчивающимися на два, три, четыре, винительный падеж сохраняет форму именительного независимо от категории одушевлённости.
Литературная норма: делегировала двадцать два ученика.
Вариант делегировала двадцать двух учеников – разговорный."
