Relation to PIE

[edit]

Isn't there any potential connection to PIE *h₂ergʰ- or *h₃rḗḱs? BoghosBoghossian (talk) 16:21, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

No, the phonetics would be irregular. --Vahag (talk) 16:58, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Aramaic origin

[edit]

@Fay Freak, can you please research the Aramaic word mentioned here? Scheftelowitz cites rkʾ, but CAL only has rkh. Which is correct? --Vahag (talk) 17:16, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

@Vahagn Petrosyan It’s the same. Trailing ā, which is widely needed for the emphatic state in Aramaic, is most commonly written א, but it is written ה in Hebrew, and hence it also appears in Aramaic, interchangeable in some regions and a manuscript variant – to the extent that you can normalize to א. Sokoloff has רכה (rkʾ) and רֵכָא (rēḵā), citing for the latter a “Babylonian Talmud vocalized according to the Yemenite Oral Tradition” Jerusalem 1980. Fay Freak (talk) 17:49, 15 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
