All my sources say Arabic طاس (ṭās) is from Persian تشت (tašt) and none of them mention Persian تاس (tās). What is the status of the latter? Are there any etymological sources on it? --Vahag (talk) 08:11, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

Some sources are even inclined to the native origin of Arabic طاس (ṭās), e.g. Nişanyan from the root ṭws. In that case Persian تاس (tās) is a borrowing. --Vahag (talk) 08:35, 16 March 2014 (UTC)

My sources say the Arabic word is from Persian tās because of the presence of the form تاس (with ت (t)) in Persian beside طاس (with originally Arabic letter ط (ṭ)), but evidence for the "Persian < Arabic < Middle Persian" theory is much more strong, in fact the تاس form is quite rare, and -st > -s change is typical of Arabic only. --Z 14:33, 16 March 2014 (UTC)
