- That's probably not what happened. There are biconsonantal words in Arabic, and these tend to add consonants (usually -w-, -y-, but possibly sometimes -h- and others) in derived forms. Of course, a form *šafhah or the like could have become šafah by elision and dissimilation, but this seems less likely.
