The semantic development in Arabic

[edit]

"The semantic development in Arabic is due to the different agriculture and diet of the Arabian peninsula vis-à-vis the Fertile Crescent." Could sb. please elaborate it a bit ? I still do not understand why the meaning is so divergent. Thanks in advance. --Backinstadiums (talk) 15:46, 6 February 2017 (UTC)Reply

It says it must be from Proto-Semitic word meaning "food". So, since the Arameans and Hebrews relied more on agriculture and eating bread, the sense "food" was developed into "bread", and in Arabia, whose people were not familiar with anything edible other than camel, lizards and date fruits, the sense developed into "meat". --Z 14:41, 7 February 2017 (UTC)Reply
