Etymology

@Fay Freak kilk as "pen" is attested in Rudaki and Ferdowsi. I don't have access to the source, but it clearly cannot be from Hindustani as defined on Wiktionary simply based on timing.--Saranamd (talk) 17:23, 6 June 2024 (UTC)

@Fay Freak I just don't see it because kilkīn is attested much more late. This source cites Monchi-Zadeh 1990 and connects kilk to Kurdish words for "finger," which makes much more sense.--Saranamd (talk) 07:26, 7 June 2024 (UTC)

@Saranamd: Monchi-Zadeh has made “such a connection”, but appears to have specifically rejected it. He says in the footnote to کلیک (klīk, kilīk, “finger”) that کلکین (kilkīn, “window”) does not belong to کلیک (klīk, kilīk, “finger”) (a seemingly Northwestern Iranian borrowing), deriving it from Hindi, but claims that کلک (kilk, “reed”) and کھڑکی / खिड़की (khiṛkī, “a private back-door; postern-gate, wicket, sally-port”) belong together, while at the same time in the maintext claiming that کلیک (klīk, kilīk, “finger”) is the same as کلک (kilk, “reed”), which are two mutually exclusive statements unless खिड़की (khiṛkī, “a private back-door; postern-gate, wicket, sally-port”) is not the same as खिड़की (khiṛkī, “window”); a contradiction that is plausible since he died before having a final look upon his last work. Please edit the entry as you see fit. I note that Monchi-Zadeh 1990 can be viewed by you even if you don’t have institutional access, since multiple people uploaded it on LibGen.
