@კვარია: Laz კოპალი (ǩop̌ali) has been connected to this family. If you now claim a native origin for it at *ḳaṗ-, then these words are Kartvelian borrowings, which is possible as the proposed etymologies are bad. I have also noticed a family of words meaning "axe, hoe, pick, sickle": Akkadian kalappu, kalabbu, kalappu, kullupinnu, Hebrew kēlappoṭ, Syriac kulbā, Mandaic kulab, Hittite kullupi-, which are considered "an ancient culture word originating in Anatolia", but I am not sure they are connected. --Vahag (talk) 17:29, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
- @Vahagn_Petrosyan: "Claim now"? Fahnrich, Klimov and Chukhua weren't aware of these parallels, so it's not like they ignored them on purpose. The fact that this word exists in nearly indentical form in Ossetian as in Laz makes me doubt that the Zan words are actually derived from that root. Chukhua considered Georgian კომბალი (ḳombali) a Laz borrowing, but in light of this page I doubt it.
- Update: I actually wasn't aware of these alternative forms in Georgian, this explain Ossetian. კვარია (talk) 18:11, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
- I didn't mean it as a criticism. The people who treated these words were not aware about the Kartvelologists' work. Now that you have brought it to our attention, we can consider the possibility that all of these are borrowed from Zan. Vahag (talk) 18:22, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
- I didn't take it as such, just strange wording. :) So what do all of those other words even mean? I'm assuming it's not tree branch as in Laz? კვარია (talk) 18:39, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
- They basically mean "stick for beating". Vahag (talk) 19:58, 26 February 2022 (UTC)
