@კვარია I know from Armenian practice that whenever they claim an ancient origin for a term unattested anciently, it is usually bogus. A borrowing from a modern language is much more likely. Ghlonti derives the Imeretian cognate from Arabic surat. I suppose he means Arabic سِرَاط (sirāṭ), صِرَاط (ṣirāṭ). Some other etymologies in Klimov 1994 seem fishy to me. Your Indo-Europeans are we and the Iranians. I don't understand how you are supposed to have borrowed terms from other Indo-Europeans. --Vahag (talk) 18:19, 4 April 2022 (UTC)

Our Indo-European are you and Greeks. From a Georgian POV, Iranian borrowings are almost of no interest at all because in majority of the cases Armenian mediation is to be assumed. :)

I don't know about Greek. I assumed their influence has been superficial and scholarly.

Via Armeniaca for Iranian borrowings has been overstated, especially by Western and older Georgian sources. Even though some of your compatriots have complained here about Acharyan, he was one of the first to argue some borrowings are directly from Iranian. Vahag (talk) 18:41, 4 April 2022 (UTC)
