If my hypothesis is correct, ㅂ was copied directly from Ancient Chinese form of hanja, 口, which can also be spotted in many other characters, such as in 多, 戰, 外, 容, 言, etc.

In Hunminjeongum, it is stated like this: 其字倣古篆, meaning 그 글자가 옛 전자(篆字)를 모방하고.

전자(篆字) meaning: 한자(漢字) 서체의 하나. 예서(隸書) 이후(以後)에 여러 체가 발명(發明)되기 전의 가장 오랜 서체임. 대전(大篆)과 소전(小篆)의 두 가지가 있음. 대전(大篆)은 주(周)나라 때에 행(行)해진 것이고, 소전(小篆)은 진(秦)나라 시황제(始皇帝) 때에 이사(李斯)가 대전(大篆)을 간략화(簡略化)한 것이라고 함. 전서(篆書)라 하면 흔히 소전(小篆)을 이름
