Wu Edit Check Request

[edit]

@ND381, Musetta6729 I've been editing Wu entries for a while now, and I basically just get the pronunciation from Wugniu but the tone contours generated don't always match the ones in the source. Is the source not necessarily right with its tone contours? For example, the Jinhua dialect pronunciation I see in the source has no tone contour for the 2nd and 3rd syllable (so neutral tone?) but there are tone contours generated by the module. So I was hoping you guys could clear that out for me. Thanks. Mar vin kaiser (talk) 16:49, 9 August 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Marvin - yes you are right, for the word 外頭人 the 2nd and 3rd syllables are neutralized in their tone however since we lack data for trisyllabic tone neutralization now in the module it might be better to leave this word for now.
In Jinhuanese tone sandhi neutral tone often occurs on just word-final syllables, and the neutral tone can usually surface as one of either /55/ /14/ or /0/.
We do have tail-neutralized tone up to two syllables, going up to disyllabic chains. This is marked with a T at the end of the chain. For example, 外頭 for 6a dieu6T would generate /ɑ14 diu0/. (Ideally this would be written as 6a 6dieu2T but I'm only just realising that our Jinhua module does not support that like our Northern Wu module does, so that's that - I'll see if I can fix that too if I have time.) I've removed the pronunciation from this word for now. — Musetta6729 (talk) 02:19, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also for what it's worth - I have been working on a part-complete documentation for the Jinhuanese module on one of my user pages, mainly referencing 曹志耘's 吳語婺州方言研究 from p95 onwards. Feel free to take a look at all the tables in Module:wuu-pron/Jinhua as well as some of the other resources above too for some more understanding. Thank you for the questions! c: — Musetta6729 (talk) 02:24, 10 August 2024 (UTC)Reply
