Which one is it?

[edit]

Based on the kanji meanings, which appear to relate to "staring" and "diversion", I assume that the correct definition (as listed on Kotobank and [1]) means "the aversion of one's gaze"; but other sources state にらみあう as a definition; isn't this the opposite of the above meaning? The quote that gets used for this definition is also quite opaque to me, and I admit I don't really understand the sentence, so I cannot tell which one of these this word is meant to exhibit. It should also be noted that this word is extremely rare, and most native dictionaries, let alone Anglo-Japanese, etc., don't even have an entry for it. Does anyone have any input on this?
